Hey there everyone! It has been an exciting day, indeed — this morning, we sent off the “official” copy of the album’s audio to Discmakers for processing! Which means it’s finished! (sort of!) Which means Mary can leave the house again! WOOHOO!

To celebrate, instead of doing our usual Tidbit Tuesday routine of teasing you with a mere snippet of audio, we’ve decide to release Leave the Earth Behind‘s very first single, “Today is the Day”, in full! East Coast Mini-tour Redux: NYC 10/22, Philly 10/23, internet radio 10/24

Hi there! Just wanted to let everyone know about the fun and fancy mini-tour we Box Fivers have coming up this coming weekend, Oct 22nd-24th. Hey lovely people! Just wanted to let you know that tickets are now on sale for BOX FIVE's CD Release Party on Saturday, November 13th at Cafe 939 (939 Boylston Street, Boston MA). The show starts at 8pm and will feature both BOX FIVE as a 17-piece mini-orchestra (7 violins, 2 violas, 1 cello, 1 flute, 1 oboe, 1 clarinet, 1 bassoon, drums, bass, and yours truly on guitar/piano/vocals), as well as siren rock phenoms Jaggery, who will be premiering a new music video of theirs that same evening. Hey Boston! TONIGHT: Box Five @ Phoenix Landing + Dig Article! ♥

Hey lovely Bostonians, hope you are having a great weekend! Just a gentle reminder that Box Five will be performing TONIGHT (Sunday, October 3rd) at the 1st-ever "Big Night Out" gay-and-lesbian dance party at Phoenix Landing (512 Mass Avenue, Cambridge MA). We can't wait to dance, dance the night away with you!! We'll be playing some upbeat, dancier versions of our tunes plus some really fun covers that require Mary to sing-talk (Gaga anyone?) and also RAP (that one is a secret :))!!! Doors are 8:30ish and the night goes a lil something like this!: Kellie Kidahl (9pm), Corinna Melanie (9:30pm), Box Five (10pm), and a final dance-inducing DJ set by DJ Elament (11pm-1am). Box Five to play "Big Night Out" GLBT Dance Party Oct 3...even though Mary can't dance! :) Fun!!

Did you know that Mary can't dance? Like, seriously. But that's not going to stop her from wearing her five inch Guess heels and trying to dance anyway during the "Big Night Out" gay and lesbian dance party on Sunday, October 3rd at Phoenix Landing in Cambridge MA! Box Five will be churning out upbeat, danceable versions of our tunes as well as some fun covers that Mary has been wanting to do for AGES (Lady Gaga, anyone?). Virtuoso violinist Eliza Kopczynska is serving as our onstage choreographer for the event, so we'll see if she can whip Mary into dancing shape by then! :)

Hello one and all! Just wanted to let everyone know that Box Five will be performing LIVE on radio station WMBR [88.1FM, Cambridge MA] TONIGHT, July 6th! Our performance will take place during "Pipeline!, WMBR's awesome local music show hosted by the fantabulous Jeff Breeze. He'll be spinning the discs of local rawk stars starting at 8pm tonight, and Box Five's live performance will follow at 9pm. We will be hitting the airwaves in trio form, featuring Eliza Kopczynska on violin, and Goli's Valerie Thompson on cello. WOOHOO!

The theme for this concert will be MIDSUMMER, so feel free to come dressed up as a wood nymph, dressed for a day at the beach, or whatever summer means to you! ♥

More info:We Box Fivers would LOVE it if you'd care to attend the PSP Contest Finals Concert! starting at 4pm! :D The Box Five tune "Unpredictable" was selected from nearly 600 entries to make it to this final concert of 14 finalists, so we are so so so happy! Mary will be performing both "Unpredictable" and one other B5 tune solo. Each audience member will get to vote for its favorite six finalists, and at the end of the concert the votes will be tallied and the winners chosen! It would mean the world to us if you could come out to this concert and cheers us on, and hopefully vote for us too cause you know how adorable we are! :) First prize is the opportunity to play a number of awesome concerts and festivals in the Philly area, so vote for us to ensure a Box Five-filled summer, hooray! :D

BOX FIVE: Official Daisy Rock Artist
HOORAY! In case you don't know, Daisy Rock is this freaking awesome company that makes guitars just for girls -- slightly smaller than your average axe, easier to play, and totally stylin'. Well, we are pleased to announce that Mary is now being endorsed as an official Daisy Rock artist! Wait til you see the new sparkly, sassy, glittery, PINK guitar that she'll be rockin' at our shows this summer! :) She's even on the DR website, you can check it out here! :) THANKS Daisy Rock!! :)

BOX FIVE: Philadelphia Songwriters Project Contest Finalist; Finals Contest on May 23rd
First off, we are THRILLED to announce that Miss Mary has been selected as a finalist in the 2010 Philadelphia Songwriters Project Contest! :D The Box Five tune "Unpredictable" was chosen from almost 600 entries to become one of the 14 official finalists of the contest, WOOOHOO!

If you're in the Philadelphia area, we Box Fivers would LOVE it if you'd care to attend the PSP Contest Finals Concert on Sunday, May 23rd at Brownies 23 East (23 E. Lancaster Avenue, Ardmore PA), starting at 4pm! :D Mary will be performing both "Unpredictable" and one other B5 tune solo. Each audience member will get to vote for its favorite six finalists, and at the end of the concert the votes will be tallied and the winners chosen! It would mean the world to us if you could come out to this concert and cheers us on, and hopefully vote for us too cause you know how adorable we are! :) First prize is the opportunity to play a number of awesome concerts and festivals in the Philly area, so vote for us to ensure a Box Five-filled summer, hooray! :D

This awesome vid was recorded live during the David Ivory Presents concert at Puck in Doylestown on February 19, 2009. Thanks so much to David and his team for both creating AND giving us the go-ahead to post this incredible video!

By the by, "The Clear" is going to be one of the ten to eleven pieces that grace our debut full-length album, Leave the Earth Behind, which will be released with much joy sometime in November of 2010.

Wait...what? Album!? WHAT?!
Yes, yes, really! :D Allow us to spill the beans at long last, even though we already just sorta did that in the previous paragraph!: our debut full-length album, Leave the Earth Behind, will be released with much joy sometime in November of 2010! And there will be a string ensemble! And an oboe! And a trumpet! And back up singers! And a harpsichord! And goddness knows what else!! :D

We'll keep the rest of the details a secret for now, but will be sending out more tantalizing tidbits in future newzletterz!! :D WOO!

Why so silent, good monsieurs?
So yes, we've only been playing out once a month or so. And yes, our blog, usually brimming with news and silly babblings of a certain redhead, has been pretty empty recently. Perhaps you are growing suspicious, and sense a mystery afoot...

Well, yes, you are right! :) We are working on something big, and fun, and decadent, and neon-colored, and awesome. And it may or may not contain punk rock Paganini violin solos. :)

We can't spill the beans just yet, but rest assured that 1) we are working hard, and 2) we are far enough along that we will be able to make an official announcement about everything quite soon!

So hold on to your hats, and hang in there! Watch this space for further updates... :)

Mary of Box Five solo @ MidEast Up 2/7: the last-minute concert of the CENTURY!
Beautiful people of Boston and Cambridge! Hello there! I just wanted to send you a quick note because i JUST now, JUST this second, found out that I will be performing at the Middle East Nightclub in Cambridge, MA on Sunday, February 7th...that's right, this very Sunday! Sure it's a last minute gig, but that's what makes it EXCITING! :)

I'll be performing sans band, as a solo singer/songwriter, because that is how these last-minute shows roll. I'll be playing Box Five tunes both old and new, PLUS I'd love to start a new Box Five tradition, "Play That Tune", in which audience members may challenge my alleged perfect pitch by shouting out any song and seeing if I can play it, right there, on the spot! FUN!

Autumn leaves and out-of-town shows
Hello to one and all, Hope you're having a fantasic fall! Sorry for the lack of newsdiary updates, but Mary and Co. have been hop hop hopping all over the darn place, from show to show! October found Box Five performing its firsts shows in Vermont (helloooo to our new friends in Montpelier and Burlington!), as well our debut appearance in Salem, MA! Thanks to everyone who attended these wonderful gigs, and look forward to seeing you again soon! <3

Hello my Philly peeps! I am sitting here in Boston, all packed up and ready to head to the City of Brotherly Love, my ride should be here any minute! :) But before hitting the road, I just wanted to send you a gentle reminder about Box Five's sure-to-be-spectacular gig at the Philadelphia Art Museum tomorrow, Sept 4th. TWO SPECIAL BOSTON SOLO GIGS

Hey you awesome Boston people! Hope you are having a smashing summer. I am currently drinking a banana-and-spinach smoothie, and despite it looking like slime from a 1980s Nickelodeon game show, it's actually pretty delicious! <3

Anyhoo! Just wanted to let you know of TWO special solo gigs I'm performing this month in the Boston area, yahoo!

The first is TONIGHT, Thursday August 20th, at the Cantab Lounge on 738 Mass Ave in Cambridge, MA. I'll be going on at 8pm sharp (just me and a guitar, old skool!), and will be opening for some truly amazing Boston talent: Ginger Ibex (9pm), Jaggery (10pm), and Choose to Find (11pm). It's going to be a fantabulous night, stay up late on a week night with us!! :)

The second is next Wednesday, August 26th at 12:00pm -- that's right, a lunch time concert! I am thrilled to be performing as part of the City of Boston's Arts on the Arcade series, taking place at City Hall Plaza (1 Government Center, Boston MA). I'll be opening for the illustrious singersongwriter Christopher Barnes, so you KNOW it's gonna be awesome!

New digital single July 10th, release parties July 10th & 19th (Boston and Philly)
Box Five is happy to announce the upcoming release of its very first digital single! The new studio track, entitled "Unpredictable", will become available on the Box Five website July 10, 2009. Box Five hasn't released new material since 2006's EP fen, so this is a super duper big darn deal! :D

Best of all, the song will be made available for download via Quidplayer, a snazzy new technology developed by Jon Darvill, which allows fans to pay what they wish for each track downloaded. Suggested retail price will be 99 cents per download, but you can pay all the way down to 22 cents, which is the amount Google checkout will charge Mary for each transaction. Nifty! But wait, there's more! In honor of our brand new tune, Mary will be playing a special gig at the Lilypad in Cambridge, MA on the day of the "Unpredictable"'s release, July 10th. New summer/autumn tour dates announced!

Hey there everybody, Mary here! <3 <3 And boy have I missed you!! ;) Now that I'm finally settled down in my new home in Boston, I can't wait to start playing amazing concerts again! WOOOO! <3

Speaking of amazing concerts, thanks to everyone who packed the Cloud Club on May 16th for our set during the "Musicals" party; it was so great to see you! <3 We quite appreciate you letting us slip in an opera tune, a Beatles cover, and even an original Box Five melody along with our chosen showtunes ;) The only sad thing is that by the end of the evening I had lost the golden crown I was wearing during the performance...if you found it, just promise me you'll wear it with style! ;)

YAY!! April 11th show in NYC has been RELOCATED to Fontana's!! (NOT canceled!!)

Hi again everyone! We were quite sad yesterday to hear that Club Rehab, the New York City venue in Box Five was supposed to perform on Saturday, April 11th had closed down. We assumed this meant our dear little show had been canceled for good, but today we received the great news that the show had simply been MOVED to a different club, called Fontana's. Awesome, we are so excited again!! :D

Mary may be moving on March 1st, but that doesn't mean she's going to spend February sitting around doing sensible things such as packing! Oh no! She'll be playing lots of concerts!! Here they are:

Yes yes, the rumors are true!: as of 03/01/09, Mary Bichner of Box Five is moving to Boston, MA!! Aaaaaah!! :O

(Don't worry though, Box Five is still alive and well, and Mary will be back to do Philly-based Box Five shows every 3-4 months or so. Phew!)

Anyhoo, we just wanted to invite you to our "Philly Farewell" gig" at L'etage on Thursday, February 12th @ 8pm. This line-up of Box Five will be HUGE, featuring a four-piece rock band, a string quartet, a woodwind quartet, and a trio of singers crooning in lovely three-part harmony! Hello to our pals in the Triangle! Just wanted to let you know that Mary will be playing TWO special solo sets in North Carolina this weekend, and both will be FREE!

The first will be at Royal Bean Coffee [3801 Hillsborough St., #137; Raleigh NC] on Friday, January 30th from 5-7pm, alongside fellow Philly singer/songwriter Alexandra Day.

The second show will take place on Saturday, January 31st at the Living Room [219 N. Salem St., Suite #203; Apex NC] starting at 8pm. Other performs that evening include thetourist, Alexandra Day, and Arielle Bryant.

The Box Five gang is SO excited for our upcoming gig at Philly's sexiest venue, L'etage! We'll be playing with a FANTASTIC string ensemble (HOORAY!), and premiering our latest work, a new tune called "The Clear" for voice, guitar, and string quartet. Joining us that evening will be New YorK City's In Flight Radio. It's sure to be an amazing night!

Saturday, 08/16/08: Box Five at the Phila Folk Festival! (Performance and CD Signing Session)

Yaaaaaaay, it's finally here! Box Five is SO excited to be performing at the 47th annual Philadelphia Folk Festival this Saturday, August 16th. Our performance will take place at 1:30pm on the WXPN stage. Check out the awesome awesome band line-up: Chris Pires on drums, Joe Gribbin on bass, Monica McIntyre on cello, Steve Toy on guitar, and silly Mary Bichner on piano, rockenspiel, kazoo, and vocals. Hurrah!

Also! We just found out that Mary will be signing autographs in the Folk Festival's CD tent at 4:30pm that very same day. So come over, and tell her to write something silly on your copy of "Best Of"!

Yahoo, our first out-of-town show! On July 5th, Miss Mary shall be playing a solo set at Bull City Headquarters in lovely Durham, NC with thetourist (YAY!), Charles Latham, and the Monologue Bombs. Show starts at 9pm, and tickets are five bucks. Plus, it's all-ages! Awesome!

Mary Performs at Puck on 01/04/07
Woohooooo! This Thursday, Jan 4th, Mary will be playing a lovely acoustic set with violinst Michelle Bishop at Doylestown's super swanky Puck restaurant [Printers Alley, Doylestown PA, 18901]. The evening will be a "Songwriters in the Round" affair also featuring the musical stylings of Tania Alexandra, Liz Longley, and Lizanne Knott. Tickets are $10.00, and the show is all-ages. It's sure to be an awesome performance, so hope to see you there! :)

Mary performs with BIRTH OF VENUS @ the Tin Angel 12/13/06
Hey there, guys and gals! If you've not yet got any plans for this Wednesday, December 13th; please join the world's spiffiest vocal collective, Birth of Venus, for their very first full-length set at Philly's super-sexy Tin Angel (20 S. 2nd Street; Philadelphia PA)! The group consists of soulful songstress Alexandra Day; sweet- and shimmery-voiced Teri Rambo, and also that loveable frontwoman from the group Box Five. (What's her name again? :))

In addition to eclectic covers ranging from Christmas carols to jazz ditties to Irish sea chanties, the lovely ladies will each be performing original tunes from their respective solo projects. Also playing that evening will be New York's Elana Arian, and happenin' headliner Tania Alexandra.

And don't forget! Mary is very excited to be playing Andrea Clearfield's musical salon this Sunday, November 26th! Here is a description of the event from Ms. Clearfield's website:

"The Salon, a performance series in the home and modeled after the 19th Century European salons, was founded in September 1986 by composer/pianist Andrea Clearfield. Unlike the Salons of the past, the Salon was conceived with the idea of integrating different music genres as well as other arts. The Salon features not only classical chamber music and opera, but also jazz, original contemporary compositions, electronic, improvisation, folk, experimental, world music, poetry, dance and multimedia works. Near the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia, the Salon reflects the strong tradition of music in our city and fosters new art forms in an intimate and supportive atmosphere."

So cool! It's sure to be an awesome evening, so hope to see you there! Suggested donation is $10, and you will be asked to remove your shoes (so be sure to wear really cute socks!! <3). Hooray, there' s a Box Five CD now! This untitled compilation -- a "Best Of" disc, if you will -- contains highlights from both Exercises in Modern Pop and fen, with Ben Camp's breathtaking "Beautiful Mystery" remix of Snow Hymn serving as the bonus track. Additionally, all tunez have been mastered, some for the first time (EiMP was never mastered, y'know!), by the smashingly splendid Turtle Studios.

Mary = 24
So yay, it's Mary's 24th birthday today! She thought it was just going to make her feel old and aging and unhip and all that, but for whatever reason, she feels GLAMOROUS. :D Possibly because the "4" is purple with her synesthesia, so paired with the pretty gold sparkle of "2" it makes her a very shiny age indeed! :D

And she's STILL writing in the third person. Is anyone else freaked out by that?

Tonight's Tin Angel Show -- AWESOMENESS TIMES A MILLION!!
Holy moly! The show sold out!! Well, almost -- all but four tickets sold out. But since there were a couple people on the guest list (including Mary's mom!) the room was still full to capacity, so I am still gonna say it sold out. WOO! :D

THANK YOU for everyone who attended tonight's performance!! We had an absolutely wonderful time playing for you, and hope you had fun too! And thanks to everyone who did the hand claps during "How Should I Your True Love Know", that was my favorite part of the whole night! ;D

And oh my gosh oh my gosh also! Mary is very excited to have been invited to play composer and pianist Andrea Clearfield's musical salon for the month of November! From Andrea's website:

Andrea hosted monthly Salons from September through May at her 1427 Spruce Street location and has recently moved into a larger space to accommodate the growing number of audience attending. Don't forget! This Friday, good ol' B5 will be playing a set outside of the Newtown Clock Shoppe for the hamlet's charming First Friday Festival. In addition to Mea-chan on guitar and vocals, Chris Pires on drums and Tim Warneck on cello; the line-up will also feature Bamboo Jazz keyboardist Joe Gribbin on glockenspiel. Actually, tonight at practice, it was christened the "Rockenspiel". And when Joe asked me, "Mary, how much 'spieling do you want in these songs?" I replied, "Joe...'spiel what you feel."

Don't forget! Box Five will be performing a tune tonight at the 2006 Philly Song Shuffle. This experimental show, part of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, consists of "4-minute sets, 4-second set changes, 50 diverse artists on one stage, and a Philly-sized dose of complete mayhem." Yay, sounds like fun!

Mary will be joined onstage by kickass bassplaya Brian Hopely. w00t!!!!1!

The show takes place at Finnegan's Wake (3rd & Spring Garden Sts, Phila PA) starting at 7PM, and tickets are ten dollaz. This is a 21+ event, so please don't forget to bring your ID!

Last night's Arts in Motion performance
Wooooo! Thank you to EVERYONE who came out last night to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to see Arts in Motion's "provocateur" concert! We had an absolutely time playing for you all, and hope you had a lovely time!

I played a couple Box Five tunes, some songs commissioned from me by AiM, and even a Radiohead cover, "Everything in its Right Place". Then, in the middle of the show, board president Eric Haeker also put me to a "perfect pitch" test by hitting some keys on the piano while I looked away...luckily, I passed with flying colors! (Get it? Synesthesia? Flying colors? Get it?...Hello?...)

Tomorrow, 09/01/06: ARTS IN MOTION's provocateur @ the PMA
Man oh man oh man! This Friday, Little Miss Mary of Box Five is quite looking forward to performing with progressive classical ensemble Arts in Motion at the world-famous Philadelphia Museum of Art! She asked if she could make her entrance by running up the front steps like Sylvester Stallone in Rocky, but the program director said no. :( Alas. :(

Anyhoo! The concert, entitled provocateur, is a tribute to "visionary subversives who have shaped the evolution of art". Part of the PMA's Art After 5 series, provocateur will feature a host of world-class musicians including violinists Hannah Cole and Michelle Bishop, violist Jennifer Han, cellist Abe Fader, pianists/composers Eric Haeker and Maurice Roberts, electronic artists Ben Camp and Michael McDermott, guitarist Ian Cole, live video/visual artists John Phillips and Raphael DiLuzio, and....you know who! :)

Mary will be performing several compositions at this show, including classical pieces commissioned by AiM, B5 solo tunes re-worked for laptop and string quartet, and maybe an art rock cover song or two. Mary even got to arrange string parts for a handful of her tunes -- fun!! <3

The show is all-ages and free after museum admission; print out the front page of the Arts in Motion website for a special discounted admission price; you can visit it HERE.

Hungry for some new Box Five tunes? Hoo boy, are you in luck! <3 Freshly posted on the jukebox page are four -- count 'em, four! -- MP3s from the B5 concert that was held at the Tin Angel on June 15, 2006. A full-band version of "Killjoy" awaits you there; as does a live version of "Exanimi" (yes, it's back!) with the 'official' lyrics finally in place; and two songs never posted on the site before -- "Set Me Straight", and "Thank You For Ruining That Song For Me".

Local Girl Makes Good: Mary Interviewed on CBS3
Hey Philly! Be sure to tune in to the 11:00pm news tomorrow night on CBS Channel 3 -- the network will be airing a special five-minute feature on none other than Box Five's Mary Bichner! The piece will discuss her work with progressive classical ensemble Arts in Motion, as well as the mysterious workings of her synesthetic little brain. Woo! :D

Folks outside the Philly area needn't fear -- the piece will eventually be available for download on cbs3.com ... Newsdiary will be sure to post the link as soon as it's made available. :)

08/04/06: Arts in Motion Rocks it at Turtle Studios, First Friday Style
On Friday, August 4th, be sure to catch Mary and the rest of the Arts in Motion kids at their sure-to-be-snazzy First Friday extravaganza, hosted by the totally awesome Turtle Studios of Old City Philly (225 Quarry Street; Phila PA, 19106). This two hour performance will feature the musical stylings of virtuoso violinist Jennifer Han, electronica mastermind Ben Camp, piano wizard Eric Haeker, visual artists John Phillips & Michael Stauffer, and -- you guessed it! -- a thirty minute set by Mary Bichner of Box Five. In addition to performing the AiM-commissioned "How Should I Your True Love Know", Mary will also throw down some of her favorite B5 solo songs. Hurrah!

Show starts at 9pm and is free free free. Hope to see you there! <3
